Active Rugby.
Better Lives.
Strength · Mobility · Confidence · Wellbeing
Coast Care Rugby brings adapted rugby activities into care settings through fun, inclusive and purposeful exercise sessions designed to encourage movement, connection and participation.

What is Coast Care Rugby?
Coast Care Rugby uses adapted rugby movements, games and exercises to practise physical abilities relevant to everyday life, including muscle strength, balance, coordination, mobility, reaction time and functional movement.
Activities can be adapted to suit different abilities, including people who are seated, have reduced mobility or require additional support.
A central aim is to help people stay active and involved in the activities that matter to them.
What the evidence shows
The World Health Organization recommends that older adults do varied physical activity that emphasises functional balance and strength training, to improve functional capacity and help reduce the risk of falls.
A Cochrane review of exercise programmes for older adults living in the community found they reduced the rate of falls by approximately 23%, with balance, functional and resistance exercises among the approaches showing beneficial effects.
This evidence relates to exercise programmes in general. It does not establish that Coast Care Rugby itself has been clinically proven to reduce falls or produce specific health outcomes. Coast Care Rugby is designed using activities that reflect these established exercise principles.
Rugby-based exercise with a purpose
Every activity is chosen for a reason, and most have more than one aim, from encouraging movement to challenging coordination and creating enjoyment.
Strength-based movement
Standing up and sitting down, reaching and lifting, passing and catching, weight shifting and controlled stepping, all working the legs, hips, core, shoulders and arms.
Balance & functional movement
Reaching, weight shifting, stepping, turning and controlled changes of direction, seated or standing, chosen because they relate to movement skills used in everyday life.
Mobility & functional ability
Reaching, turning, stepping, sitting and standing, and coordinating upper- and lower-body movement, delivered seated, supported or standing where appropriate.
Coordination & reaction time
Responding to a moving ball builds hand-eye and foot-eye coordination, reaction speed, concentration, spatial awareness and motor control.
Cardiovascular & bone health
Gentle adapted activity raises the heart rate within each person's capabilities; weight-bearing and resistance movements are recognised components of muscle and bone health.
Social wellbeing & confidence
Fun, socialising, teamwork, a sense of achievement and reminiscing about rugby. The familiar language of the game makes activity feel engaging and approachable.
These are potential benefits of regular, appropriately designed physical activity, not clinically proven outcomes of Coast Care Rugby. The extent of any benefit varies with each participant's abilities, health, attendance and engagement, and any changes should be assessed individually. Coast Care Rugby does not guarantee individual improvements and is not described as preventing falls or as a treatment for any condition.
Rugby with a purpose
Coast Care Rugby combines adapted sport, physical activity, social interaction and purposeful participation in one accessible programme. It is informed by established physical-activity principles for strength, balance and functional movement, and translated into a fun, adaptable programme for care environments.
Sessions are delivered with appropriate consideration of participants' health, mobility, communication needs and individual risk assessments. Coast Care Rugby is not a substitute for medical advice, physiotherapy, occupational therapy or an individually prescribed exercise programme.
Move. Connect. Participate. Thrive.
Making a Difference Together

Giving Back Through Rugby
The Coast Foundation is the not-for-profit arm of Coast. Its purpose is simple: to use sport and physical activity to give back to the community.
The Foundation will work with care homes, schools and community organisations to provide opportunities for people who may otherwise have limited access to sport, exercise and positive activities.

Care Homes
Supporting care homes with free or subsidised rugby-inspired exercise and activity sessions.
Schools
Helping schools provide additional opportunities for children to experience rugby, physical activity and teamwork.
Community Rugby
Supporting children and communities who may face financial or social barriers to participating in sport.
Inclusive Activity
Creating opportunities for people of different abilities and backgrounds to enjoy movement, sport and community.
How We Make It Happen
The Coast Foundation relies on the generosity of donors, sponsors and grant funding to support the communities we work with.
Every donation and grant helps us provide more opportunities for children, older adults and communities to get active and experience the benefits of sport.
Donate. Support. Give Back.
Together we can give more back.
